Smyrna produces very large pear-shaped yellow fruits. The flesh is a light yellow and is sweet when cooked. Self pollinating. Not usually eaten as fresh fruit. Ideal for stewing with its delicious flavour and aroma. Also used in preserves and jellies.

Grow in a sunny position in moist, rich well drained soil. Apply complete  fertiliser in spring. Prune after harvest, removing crowded and crossing branches to allow light to penetrate.
