Dwarf Apple Granny Smith
Malus domestica (Granny Smith)
One of the worlds best cooking apples and a superb eating apple if left on the tree to ripen fully (when a yellow blush appears on the green skin). A universal pollinator, that will cross pollinate all Apples: Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, Jonathan, Red Fuji, Pink Lady, Cox’s Orange Pippin and Lady Williams.
A medium sized, deciduous Apple tree, providing prolific quantities of bright, green, crisp, sweet fruit. Ideal feature tree. Can be tart – a sweeter flavour develops if the fruit is left to hang on the tree.
Choose an open sunny position in well-drained soil. After planting spread mulch above the roots to retain moisture and suppress weeks, but keep away from trunk. Apply fertiliser to soil above the roots as soon as new growth begins in spring and water in well. Protect from strong winds. Consider netting to protect from birds. Correct pruning techniques are essential to the trees fruiting success. Before planting, prune well back to outward pointing buds. When established, prune in winter.
